DOLPO SPIRIT Thukten - Himalayan Artist

Greetings, I am Thukten, a Himalayan artist, and I am honored to share a glimpse of my life's journey with you. Born on May 3, 1982, into a family of artists in the scenic Dolpa district of Nepal, I have always called this place my home. Together with my wife, four daughters, and a son, our family of seven embarks on life's adventures every day. My wife plays a vital role in our household as a diligent farmer, helping us sustain our livelihood from the land we deeply cherish. Three of my daughters were sent to Kathmandu at a young age for their education, where they were lovingly cared for by my brother, Dolpo Tulku Rinpoche. One of my daughters resides with us in the village, assisting with farming tasks and embracing the simple joys of rural life while pursuing her studies at the local school.

In my early years, access to education was a challenge as our village lacked a school and the importance of formal education was not widely recognized. However, I was fortunate to receive artistic guidance from my grandfather, a skilled artist. He ignited the flame of passion within me for art and painting, which has since become an integral part of who I am. Over time, I dedicated myself to honing my artistic skills in various forms, from painting altars, tables, and walls to sculpting and embellishing the sacred Monasteries (Gumba) in our community.

ABOUT ART

On a transformative journey to Kathmandu in 2012, I explored small art galleries and noticed a prevalent use of paper, cloth, and wall surfaces for art displays. This discovery inspired me to infuse a unique touch to my creations by painting on wood. I realized that wood art was a rare and traditional Himalayan craft, valued for its authenticity and exclusivity. Unlike mass-produced prints or copies, each piece I craft is a labor of love, a distinct masterpiece enriching the world of art.

ABOUT MY WORK

At age 25, I began my artistic pursuits as an apprentice to a seasoned artist, focusing on painting altars, tables, walls, and sculptures.
